In
an effort to raise awareness the Miss America's Outstanding
Teens are going green! The initiative began in Orlando at the
national competition as they partnered with their host hotel,
The Rosen Centre, in their initial efforts to support the
environment. The hotel offers
Rosen
Green Meetings® which are events which are conducted in
specific ways which help reduce the environmental burdens
imposed by such activities.
Rosen
Hotels & Resorts have applied environmentally friendly methods
to manage waste, energy use, water conservation, and clean air
practice and promotion. MAOT was excited to participate and
do their part by having recycling bins in public areas at all
rehearsals and events and cutting down on electric throughout
the week. Even the queens can go green, conserving energy by
sharing portable electronic devises, hair dryers, curling
irons and unplugging any appliances that are not in use.
Rehearsals and preliminary competitions were held each night
at the Orlando Convention Center.
The
Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) is not only known for
being the second largest convention center in the nation, but
it is also becoming nationally-recognized for its green
initiatives. The OCCC exemplifies its commitment to
environmental stewardship through ongoing projects and
consistent review of its facilities and processes. MAOT
continued its dedication and
commitment to green programs working with the OCCC to follow
their best practices on green initiatives.
The
executive and production team received chipboard recycled
3-ring binders to use through out the week. The MAOT
organization will continue their commitment to the environment
with using Rebinders eco-friendly green office products. The
executive team will continue to reach out and partner with
sponsors and companies that bring green friendly products and
ideas to the organization.
As the
teens return to their hometowns and represent their states as
leaders and role models they will be challenged to continue
their efforts in supporting this social cause and adapting
this eco friendly lifestyle anyway they can and knowing the
importance of "The Power of One
that everyone can make a
difference and at any age.
The
girls will be asked to keep track and promote their efforts in
hopes that it can lead to something much bigger. Following in
the footsteps of former winner, Caitlin Brunell, who has done
her part in going green by starting her own recycling charity
called Caitlin's Closet, MAOTeen's are encouraged to get
creative!
Some suggested best practices and green "tips" that the girls
will be encouraged to implement:
|
 |
CARPOOL!
As a teen it is exciting to be waiting in line to be the
next to get a driver's license, but in the mean time ride
with your friends! Leaving your car at home just 2 days a
week will save 1,590 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions each
year. |
Tupperware-
Taking Tupperware products whenever possible, to lunch,
classes or afterschool events will help cut down on paper bags
and disposable plastic containers at the schools each day.
School
Supplies-
Using recyclable office supply products where possible from
binders, folders, CD sleeves, journals and even paper and
presentation materials and print double sided where possible!
Shop
Green-
Shop green and wear green, many clothing companies offer
bamboo alternatives. When you do shop, "BYB" Bring your own
Bag!! Most grocery stores offer reusable bags that you can
bring back.
Energy
Saving-
Being females there is always an electric devise in use,
unplug anything that is not in use at all times and keep the
lights off when you don't need them
|
 |
Take Showers, not a bath
A 10-minute shower can use less water than a
full bath. A new showerhead also will save energy - up to
$145 each year on electricity.
|
|
 |
Get into Gardening!
Help mom and dad or get into gardening
yourself. Trees absorb carbon dioxide- as much as a ton
over the lifetime of the tree. Trees also provide shade,
which can reduce heating bills and cut back on energy. |
Recycle
and Reuse-
Back to basics, keep up and recycle anything, bottles,
magazines, shampoo, cleaning products. And when you have the
option of paper or not, don't!
When heading off to college or living on your own, as much as
it might be easier no paper products, use the real thing.
